Stephanie Dunkin

• Instructor of Ceramics Visual Artist

Stephanie Dunkin was born in Lafayette, Indiana and raised in Houston, Texas. She has been involved in some aspect of art since childhood with her first award, at age seven, in her science class after creating a dimensional, shaded drawing of fibers she viewed through a microscope. From that point on, her art skills were nurtured and she included art in each grade level finding sculpting in clay, during her sophomore year, her favorite art form. By high school graduation, she had a choice to make for her future – continue and develop her skills in art or begin her education in veterinarian medicine. She went on to concentrate in the art field obtaining a degree in commercial art with major focus on all expressions of media design, from designing the printed page to designing and orchestrating a 60-second television commercial. With her schooling behind her, she went on to work freelance for several advertising agencies and later came to own her own advertising and marketing company.

Today, she works for a Horse Association managing their media and publications. Upon her move to Columbiana, AL in 2006, she discovered the Art Academy and decided it was now time to resurrect her passion for clay and she hasn’t stopped sinking her hands into the clay ever since.

Although Stephanie’s creations are functional, her work leans more towards a conservative whimsical side of expression. “What I enjoy most is creating things for the outdoors that peak out from the landscape to give someone pause for thought, a smile and even a beautiful, lingering sound,” Stephanie explained.
